Beauty Bar {Allure Sample Society} – January 2015

It's that time again, friends!  The past week or so has been a good one with regards to my mail!  All three of my monthly subscription boxes arrived, so I've been sampling things out, so it's time to share the first one...Allure's Beauty Bar Sample Society Box!

This month's box was not my favorite, I'll be honest.  But, hey, it happens!  It wasn't a total bust, but nothing really inspired me to part with my cash and place an order.  I also didn't find any products that I love, love, love, which is a little disappointing.  But, you know the old win some, you lose some!

So...let's dive in, shall we?

#1 |  Strivectin Intensive Illuminating Serum

This item is a mystery item!  I say it's a mystery because while it came in my box this month, it's not listed on the product card they send with the box, nor is it shown online when I view my box contents!  So...I have NO info on what is the proposed benefit of using this serum, other than what the front of the box says..."Boosts skin clarity for a brighter, more even complexion".

I tried it anyway (it was there, so why not?!) and I like it!  It smells really nice (a light floral scent).  I've been using it for a few days and can't say I've notice a difference in my skin, but typically these types of serums require a longer use before any changes are visible.

While I like it, I'm not planning on buying it simply because I'm not really in the market for a product like this.  But, it was nice to give it a try!

#2 | Philip B. Light-Weight Deep Conditioning Creme Rinse

This conditioner surprised me!  My hair tends to drink in conditioner, so I need something good and creamy that errs on the side of heavy.  As I applied it to my hair, it felt like I didn't have enough (I could barely feel it on my hair), so I piled a little more on.

I didn't have high hopes since I felt it wasn't heavy enough, yet, as I dried my hair, it looked pretty good.  Even better, during the day, it looked really good!

I'm on the fence with this one...while it worked very well, I really didn't like the light feel.  Perhaps I could get used to that, but honestly, I love my L'Oreal conditioner, so I'm going to stick with that for now!

#3 | Revlon PhotoReady Eye Art Lid + Line + Lash (color: Peach Prism)

Let me start off by saying I love the concept of this eye makeup.  While I don't use a lot of creamy/liquid shadows, I do like them.  One end of this is a creamy, slightly shimmery, thick shadow.  On the other end is a more translucent, very glittery...something.  I'll be honest, I'm not really sure what you use this particular side for!

Maybe you can use it for a sparkly eyeliner, or perhaps to brush a little glitter on your cheeks?  I'm not entirely sure and being that I'm in my late 30s, large chunks of glitter on my face just isn't going to work.

The creamy side would have potential except for the color...this is a very light peachy color.  It's not a flattering color for me and I would never wear this!

While I'm all for trying things (except for that chunky glitter!), I couldn't even muster enough interest in this one to swipe it across my lids (one of the many perks of being in my late 30s...I KNOW what colors work and don't work on me!).

So...this one is a big fail and went straight into the bin!

#4 | Erno Laszlo Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar

This little gray bar is a charcoal and mud facial bar soap (and first off, how cute is that mini bar of soap!!).  While it says it's great for all skin types, it's particularly good for oily skin or those prone to breakouts.  I am neither of those and my skin tends to be on the dry side, so I was a little apprehensive about this one.

It smells very clean (which is what you'd expect soap to smell like!) and it lathers up into a gray foam.  It worked skin did feel very clean after I washed my face with it.  It also felt very soft, but unfortunately, my skin also felt a little tight within a few minutes of using it (even after applying a moisturizer afterwards!).

Even if I had liked it, I'm not a huge fan of bar that alone would probably discourage me from buying it, but couple that with the fact that it is too drying for my too went straight into the trash!

#5 | Zoya Lacquers (color: Tiana)

I love nail polish and I even love non-traditional colors.  I love me some blue nails, or something unexpected that is fun!  But...I'm not overly crazy with this particular shade.  It's a bit too pastel for me.  While I love pastel pinks on my nails, for some reason, this one just isn't doing it for me.

I have tried Zoya polishes in the past and have been happy with them, so I was disappointed to have received this particular shade.  In the product pamphlet they sent, it shows several colors in this line and there are some lovely ones I would've been very happy to try!  I'm not sure if they sent this particular color out to everyone or I was just one of the lucky ones :).

Sadly, this little bottle ending up becoming friends with the eyeshadow and mini soap bar in the trash bin!

#6 | Philosophy Renewed Hope in a Jar

Philosophy!  I love Philosophy products!  Finally...a product that I'm excited to try!!  This particular formula of their cult fave Hope in a Jar, is a hyped version called 'Renewed' Hope in a Jar!  What's the hype?  It's an anti-aging formula for all ages.

I'm currently on the hunt for a good moisturizer and I've found one that I LOVE (like, my first born - if I had one - for a jar of it, because it is pricey!).  I haven't taken the plunge and ordered myself a full jar of my pricey fave (I'm currently working through a sample jar and trying to stretch that baby out as long as possible!), so I was hoping this might be a viable substitution.

It's's creamy, it's moisturizing, and my skin felt good throughout the day.'s not nearly as good as my sell-a-kidney-to-buy-it fave (which I think I will pony up and order because it makes my skin feel so good!).

If you are in the market for a really good, but not break-the-bank face cream, then I would recommend this one.

If you're keeping score, that's three products that I liked (but not enough to buy) and three products that went straight into the trash.  Not a horrible month, but not the best!  Fortunately the 'meh' months are far outweighed by the 'yay' months, so I'll continue to carry on and try some more!

What you do think?  Are you a subscriber to a monthly box service?  If so, which one?!  I love hearing about new products and services!
