Everybody has a dream. I don’t think it’s possible to go through life without dreaming of how we want to live our life or what we want in our life.
Some people go after those dreams and make them happen, or they find variations of what they thought they wanted and tweak the plan along the way!
Some people think they’re going after their dreams, but they’re not really putting in the work to get there.
Some people never do a thing to make their dreams happen and spend their life wishing for change, but thinking it’s not possible.
Making your goals and dreams happen is HARD. It takes focused work, sacrifice, and dedication.
You have to really want something to put the steps in place to go out and grab it.
My dream is to eventually work for myself as a coach and inspire women to follow their dreams and live the lives they truly deserve.
But, it’s not going to happen overnight. In fact, it’ll likely take a couple of years of hard work and hustle to get to the point where I can leave my day job.
Right now, I’m working full time (with about an hour commute each way), attending coaching school (which eats up a minimum of 5-6 hours of my evening time every week), managing my blog and staying on top of continually providing new content and value, and running my Moxie Girl tribe and in particular, the awesome Facebook group. So, I'm basically doing a full time job, plus two part time jobs!
But...all of that will get me to my dream.
The day job is giving me a salary that allows me to save money in preparation for flying on my own, my blog helps me reach new people and connect with women who may (or may not, that’s okay!) become my clients some day, and the Facebook group allows me to build a community of like-minded women, not only for support, but for inspiration and lots of amazing connections.
What does that leave me with? How does the rest of my life look?
Well, there's not a lot of free time, only about 5 hours of sleep a night, the constant inner struggle to not buy something I might dearly want, no dating life, and a schedule busier than I’ve ever had in my life.
But…I LOVE it! I love the path I’m on and where I’m heading and I know with every fiber in my body that I will get there. I just have to keep my eye on the prize. The sacrifices of today, will pay off HUGE in the future!
What it Means to Chase a Dream
It takes commitment and a dogged determination that will only surface itself when you find that passion that you want to pursue.
But once you find it, merely wanting it isn’t enough.
You have to do something every single day to make it happen. It might take years, but if you want it badly enough, you’ll see each day as a chance to take a step closer to where you want to be.
What it looks like to chase a dream
If you want something badly enough, you'll go for it. You might be wondering what that looks like, so let me shine a light on it through my lens (it might look slightly different for you, but it'll be a variation of this):
- You’ll feel that fire burning and won’t be able to stop yourself from following it.
- You’ll happily wake up at 5am every day, if necessary, even though you’re not a morning person just so you have extra time to put towards your goal.
- You’ll take on extra jobs to make the money to support yourself and your dream.
- You spend every spare minute you have putting effort into making it happen (which could be actually doing something, or simply thinking about what you need to do next)
- You believe in yourself and know you’re worth it, so you put forth whatever it takes to get there.
- You don’t let others tell you that you can’t make it or it’s not for you. You’re determined to show them they’re wrong and you eventually do.
- You fail, but you don’t let it stop you. You dissect your failures to learn what went wrong and you try again with more knowledge.
- You get uncomfortable from time to time, because chasing something we don’t have requires doing things we’ve never done.
How Bad Do You Want it?
Your dreams will require sacrifice. If you’re spinning your tires and nothing is happening with regards to your life objectives, then ask yourself what are you willing to give up or put up with to make your dreams happen.
Your dreams won’t simply be handed to you. It’s not enough to just want a different life, or a three week European trip, or a house in the Caribbean. If won't be handled to you simply because you are breathing on this planet. You are not entitled to it...you have to earn it.
If you want it bad enough, you have to be willing to put in the work or effort.
If your dream is to become a surfer and you live in Nebraska, what are you going to do to get yourself to California? It’s going to take having a plan, working a couple of jobs to save-save-save, saying no to friends and Friday nights out and shopping because you don’t want to waste money, which would mean delaying your dream.
One of the best examples of people trying to follow a passion are the folks trying to make it in the entertainment industry. We’ve all heard the stories of the mega movie star that started out waitressing tables and working 3 jobs to make their dream happen. Despite trying to get started in a super competitive industry where there’s only a limited number of people that make it, they give it every single thing they’ve got and then some. They sacrifice being with their families, spending time with friends, sleeping, spending money on stupid stuff...all so they can make their dream come to life.
If you’re stuck on one of your dreams and you don’t feel it’s happening, then I have to ask you...
- What are you willing to put up with and/or sacrifice to make your dream happen?
- Where are you missing opportunities to spend more time on your objective and dream?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again...really tapping into why you want to make something happen will help you fuel that fire and make it burn brighter.
[graphic: When faced with an obstacle or an alternative that may take you off your path, circle back to your why and it will help you stay the course.]
If you are finding that what’s required to get where you want to go isn’t something you want to do, then you have to ask yourself how badly you really want your dream. Because if you truly wanted to get there, you’d be willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen.
It’s time to get real with yourself…get clarity on your dreams, get focused on your life, and go out there and make it happen!
